2019-2020 Ensemble Placement Auditions
Students will be placed in the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band based on the results of their playing audition. In addition, students who receive lower than a grade of C on the written exam will not be admitted to Wind Ensemble or Jazz Band.
How the playing audition will work:
Students will sign up for a 4-minute time slot on the dates listed below. Students will perform the prepared etude, 2 scales chosen at random, and sight-reading for Mr. Reed. Students will be judged using the Solo and Ensemble Rubric approved by the Florida Bandmaster’s Association. Students selected to participate in Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band will receive a formal invitation from Mr. Reed and their names will be submitted to the NHS Guidance Department for scheduling.
Scales will be chosen from the following Concert Pitch Major Scales:
C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, G, D, A, E, B
Dates (Sign up for a specific time with Mr. Reed):
May 7th and May 9th – 5th Period Students During Class and After School
May 13th, 14th and 16th – 4th Period Students During Class and After School
May 16th – 7th Period Students During Class and After School
May 21st - Current 8th Grade Students and Transfer Students

Drum Set Audition Requirements:
32 bar groove with appropriate improvisational fills reflecting each of the following styles:
Straight Ahead Swing at 150 bpm
Samba or Bossa Nova at 100 – 140 bpm
Funk/Gospel at 100 bpm
